disable update dialog

I'm sure this has been asked many times but I could not find it via the
Search. We need to turn off the dialog that pops up asking to download a
new version. What is the easiest way to turn this off? We cannot go
mucking about in the registry. This is a serious issue as when the
dialog pops up it stalls the website for all users. Please help.
